From the archive
The summer town that was taken back
For more than six decades, the Sandlass family ran Highland Beach, a resort on the narrow strip of sand where Sandy Hook meets the mainland. Families came by boat and by train to swim, eat, dance, and stay the season.
It lasted from 1900 to 1962, when the state took the land by eminent domain and the resort came down. Almost nothing of it remains. The family's 1893 home, now known as Building 600, is one of the last pieces still standing.
Stand at the foot of the Highlands bridge this morning and look toward the Hook. That stretch of beach was once someone's whole summer.
How today fits the season, the year, and the long record of this coast. Updated every morning.
